For Adults & Families

Come and learn about Purple Martins, the largest member of the swallow family in North America. Learn about their amazing migration and how to be a successful Purple Martin landlord.  This hands-on course will include installing housing at the former Clark Farm on Colonel Ledyard Highway with the hopes of attracting martins to the site.   See what makes a colony successful and why these birds rely totally on human-supplied housing east of the Rockies.  Interested volunteers will help install the housing and perform weekly inspections and keep monitoring records for nesting activity.  Monitoring starts in June and continues until fledging around the end of July.  No birding experience necessary…come and be fascinated by this large, bug eating wonder!  Binoculars are great to have for monitoring, but not required.  A great experience for all ages.

Workshop
Information about the species, including slide show, hands on materials, including gourd housing, books, monitoring forms and dawn song tape. Signups for housing installation for Saturday, March 28th, 11:00 a.m. at the Clark Farm, and for volunteer monitors of the housing. Facebook updates on nest activity can also be part of this experience.
